Swimming Carnivals

Division A – I swimming carnivals were held at the Hobart Aquatic Centre and if it is possible, ran more smoothly than even last year! Divisional carnival winners were

Division A – Waimea, Division B – Brighton, Division C -  Bellerive, Division D – Howrah B, Division E – South Arm, Division F – Mt Faulkner, Division G – Swansea, Division H – Triabunna, Division I – Goodwood.

Thanks to all team managers for the excellent organisation of swimmers, retiree helpers, Rosny students and volunteers who officiated. Officiating is always a full on job without a break and your efforts are much appreciated.

Next year the carnivals will drop back to 8 divisions.

Champions Swimming Carnival

The Champions Carnival again drew in large spectator crowds and approximately 400 competitors. It is a challenging day in a noisy environment but again due to the support from Swimming Tasmania and our group of volunteer officials, all went smoothly.

Congratulations to the following swimmers who broke records on the day:

Thomas Wilkins ( Waimea) – Grade 3 25m Aquatic Underarm (21.80 secs)

Ashleigh Probert-Hill ( Mt Stuart) -  Grade 4 25m Backstroke (19.68 secs)

Jessica Novak (Campania) – Grade 4 50m Freestyle (35.21 secs)

All Champions Carnival results and record holders can be viewed on the SPSSA website.

SPSSA website: www.spssa.tased.edu.au   Students from the Champions Carnival were offered the opportunity to attend a coaching session at Collegiate Pool on Tuesday 1st December.

Thanks to Wes Beattie, Greg Turner, Katherine Corney, Amelia Dunbabin, Jo Hickman, Daryl Jacobs, Matt Kenny, Carl Lawton, Danny Neal, Max Coreny, Peter O’Keefe, Mike Donnelly, Ken Doughty, Peter Marmion and Gary Shanahan who officiated on the day.

Thanks also to Swimming Tasmania for providing their officials and the use of their equipment for the day.

Farewell to Brent Street

Brent Street’s involvement in our SPSSA sporting events finally comes to an end this week. We thank them very much for their keen involvement in all our events over the years. We wish all the staff and students well and hope to see Brent Street students competing with their new schools at SPSSA interprimary events in 2010.

Triathlon

The Community Assist Schools Triathlon Challenge was a huge success again this year thanks to the tireless efforts of Tim Smith, organizer of the event. 2000 students completed the Community Assist Schools Triathlon Challenge and 1606 of these were primary students which is a fantastic response to this event.

This year’s weather conditions for the primary event could not have been
better or more of a contrast from last year’s nonstop rain. The day ran very smoothly and for those who attended as spectators or officials it was a wonderful sight to see so many children actively involved in individual or team events.

Rosny Vocational Education Students

For the last 4 years the Rosny VET Sport and Recreation Program has provided students to help out at all our carnivals. It has been a mutually beneficial arrangement for both Rosny College and the SPSSA. As part of their program students are required to undertake practical sessions and the association is able to provide that opportunity by offering officials duties at our carnivals. The students are always well dressed, responsible, professional and interact very well with our primary children. We are fortunate to be part of the Rosny VET program and thanks to Jan Bean, their coordinator, for the hours of work she does in rostering and organizing students to attend our carnivals.

The Team Approach!

So many more of our SPSSA schools now have a school athletic and cross country uniform and some schools have even provided school swimming attire and caps for their students. It gives a great feel to all of our carnivals to have your students prepared well for their events and a sense of being part of a team.

It was also great to see the number of schools who brought their school flag along for the final presentation at our swimming carnivals this year.

However if your school hasn’t got a flag, has mislaid it or just needs a new one this could be the time to get organized and be ready for 2010!

SPSSA End of Year Function

The function was held at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre and was one of the best attendances we have had for some years. It was great to be able to thank so many of you in person.

Thanks

The year could not go by without me thanking a number of groups in our association. Our retiree helpers have been fantastic this year, willingly helping out when ever they are able. They are Geoff Clow,Lewis Hamnett, Kath and Max Corney, Bernard Knight, Marg and Paul Ingram, Daryl Jacobs, Terry Dando, Rob Warren, Mike Donnelly, Ken Doughty, Bill Atkinson and Melvin Freestone.

Thanks also to the SPSSA Executive Committee, Our President Beth Nichols and Treasurer Danny Neal.

Lastly thank you to principals, teachers, office administrators and parents who have worked toward providing participation and enjoyment for our primary children.

Have a great Christmas and New Year, see you next year!
