Australia’s Inaugural  “OPENING DOORS PROGRAM”

for students with a disability

What is the “Opening Doors Program”?

The primary aim is to increase the number of young people with disabilities participating in sport and recreation activities.

Studies have shown that young people with a disability have the same

interests as their able bodied peers.  Unfortunately, for many, the step into sporting clubs and organisations is perceived as too difficult.

The “Opening Doors Program” has been designed to overcome barriers to participation.  Through a process of ability and interest assessments,

participants will be linked to sporting organisations and teachers will become more knowledgeable in promoting the opportunities that exist.

Our dedicated team is committed to catering for all students with a disability regardless of their desired level of participation.  It is envisaged however that a number of identified students will progress to National and International representation.

What does the “Opening Doors” Team Do?

Once a school has registered for the program the Team will

·                Contact the school for preliminary discussions with PE staff to identify potential participants.

·                Visit the school, establish a rapport with the eligible students,

        teachers, aides and parents.

·                Conduct interest and ability assessments

·                Devise a participation plan each student

·                Provide ongoing support

·                Provide Classification opportunites

·                Provide additional support for those students wishing to compete at a state or National level.

How much does it cost?

The program is available to schools for a minimal fee of $50.00.

 In addition to the program the schools will receive the following:

Membership to Tasrad

Discounted access to Disability Education Program courses

Access to guest speakers

Access to modified sports equipment (available 2003)

Access to resource library, (video, manuals etc)
